We love our pets. In fact, we love them so much we can’t bear to leave them at home when we go on vacation. From pet-friendly vacation rental homes to attractions and activities geared just for your pet, there’s more reason now than ever to bring ‘em with you when you travel. Generally speaking, pet-friendly equates to dog-friendly, so below we’ve listed some of the friendliest cities for your furry family members. Each of these destinations offers something a little special for your dog, whether it’s miles of open space for endless games of fetch, or specialized boutiques for a little puppy pampering. Portland, OR

This northwest city is one of the best pet-friendly destinations in the country… oh, and human travelers will probably enjoy it, too! After a long day of touring Portland, you and your dog may just need a little relaxation. Virginia Beach, VA

Heading to the beach? Bring your dog with you! In the town of Virginia Beach, pets are welcomed with open arms. This costal vacation destination boasts nearly 200 pet-centric businesses and 15,000 acres of public parks for your buddy to enjoy. With popular annual events like Woofstock and the K-9 Karnival, Virginia Beach celebrates your pet just the way you do.

Denver, CO

There are over 500 pet-related businesses in Denver — more than any other city in the country! Think doggy boutiques, grooming salons, and pet bakeries… what pup wouldn’t love that?  Setting aside the “shopportunities” in Denver, your canine companion is sure to love the nearby mountains, which offer endless hiking trails and outdoor space to wear off some energy. Be sure to double-check ahead of time to make sure your planned trek is dog-friendly.

Chicago, IL

Chicago has become a dog-lovers haven in recent years, with pet-friendly shops, restaurants, and bars popping up all over the city. With miles of waterfront trails along Lake Michigan, and several dog beaches within the city, there’s no lack of outdoor space for your dog to get some exercise in.

San Diego, CA
