Home improvement can earn you money, especially if you’re adding amenities to a vacation rental home. Even small additions can attract attention when you mention them in your rental listing, and make for happier renters who’ll talk up your vacation home or come back again. You can add extra perks to your home by yourself, without breaking the bank. We’ve already given you some inexpensive ideas for sprucing up your home décor on a dime. If you’re feeling more ambitious, here are a few more substantial additions that can make your vacation rental home more attractive and fun:
- Picnic table: If your vacation home has a yard, deck, or patio, add a table and benches or chairs. For under $200, you can create an attractive outdoor dining area.
- Outdoor speakers: For as little as $150, you can add even more outdoor fun. Just buy outdoor speakers for your deck, patio, or back porch, and get them connected to your vacation home’s existing stereo system. Install them yourself if you’re good with wiring, or pay a little extra for expert help.
- Backyard sandbox or playset: To attract families with kids, add a simple play area. A small sandbox is the easiest and safest play area you can add, and you put one on a deck if your home doesn’t have a yard. The DIY Network offers free how-to plans for a simple sandbox and for a sandbox with a roof. If you do have a yard, you can add a playset with swings, slides, and climbing areas for about $200. You can find a guide to the best backyard swings and playsets here.
- Deck or patio: If you have outdoor space and you’re very handy and ambitious, add a deck or patio to your vacation rental home. The Deck Designer tool on DIYOnline (which requires a free membership) will help you plan a deck to the measurements you provide, and will give you a materials list and instructions. The DIY Network also has plenty of articles and video tutorials to help you build your own deck or patio.
